Alpha Cares: November is Diabetes Awareness Month

Posted by

November is Diabetes Awareness Month! In 2012, 29.1 million Americans, almost 10% of the population, had diabetes. And still 1.4 million Americans are diagnosed every year. If the trend continues, 1 in every 3 Americans will have diabetes in their lifetime. The good news is, however, that many cases of diabetes are easy to prevent.

We can only know how to prevent diabetes if we know how it develops. Glucose is the main source of energy for your body. It comes from the food you eat and it is also made in your liver and muscles. Your pancreas creates a hormone called insulin that carries the glucose to other parts of the body. However, sometimes the pancreas doesn’t make insulin like it should, so the glucose sits in the blood and develops diabetes.

Types 1 Diabetes develops in children due to the immune system stopping the creation of insulin. Type 2 Diabetes, on the other hand, is typically referred to as Adult-Onset Diabetes and it can be prevented through a healthy diet and exercise.
